It was founded in 1793 on the place of a Moldavian settlement Sucklea. It was named by a mistake in honor of the old Greek colony Tiras that was in quite another place. In 1795 it got the status of a city. Since 1923 it was a town of Odesa province, 1924 - the capital of Moldavian SSR which was part of Ukraine. Since 1940 it belonged to Moldova.
