CHORNYI OSTRIV
It was founded in 1366. Magdeburg rights was given in 1556. During the raids of the Tatars to Podillya, colonel Svysch together with his army fled to the island Bug and settled there. Residents of the settlement built protective moats. In the Middle Ages all the island's population had died from the plague. There were reason of the name origin - Chornyi Ostriv (Black Island).
The owners of settlement were Pshezdets'kyi's graphs. In the XVIII century was built a magnificent palace. In 1817 there was built Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. There were nobility county school for girls. From 1856 to 1859 in this school taught the history a outstanding Ukrainian poet and fabulist, Leonid Glibov. In 1847 there stayed outstanding composer Franz Liszt.
In 1873 two daughters of Count went to a walk on horseback. One of them - Laurie - fell from a horse. Severe injury confined the girl to bed. She died at 21 years of age. She was buried in the family crypt, which was under the building of the church. Her parents ordered gravestone from the Victor Brods'kyi, outstanding sculptor and professor of the Petersburg Academy of Arts. Master worked on order for 2 years. Headstone of white Carrara marble was delivered by rail. The monument was installed in the church. Now this tomb is in the Kamyanets'-Podil's'kyi.
